State Highway 30 is blocked at Lake Rotoiti following a serious crash with a significant detour in place, police say.

The two-vehicle crash happened shortly before 11.40am and there are serious injuries.

“Motorists travelling north from Rotorua will need to take State Highway 33 between Tikitere and Paengaroa, before utilising State Highway 2,” a police statement said.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the crash is west of Tamateatutahi St, beside Lake Rotoiti.

“Please follow directions of emergency services in the area. Expect delays."

Alternative route: Use SH33, SH2 and SH30 via Paengaroa and Te Teko.
