After almost 100 years of supplying Coromandel Granite for World War I memorials around New Zealand, Colville is finally to have its own memorial unveiled on August 3. Colville's memorial is not just for those who died in World War I, but also those who stayed behind and worked for the war effort at home, says the Thames Coromandel District Council. Local author Lindsay Garmson instigated the project. 'I spoke to [locals] Les and Marcus Ward about it, we agreed, grabbed a couple of blocks of granite and we now have a memorial.” Barry Brickell has made and fired a plaque and the community is inviting all with an interest in the commemoration and heritage to come to the unveiling ceremony at the Colville War Memorial Hall from 12.30pm, says Thames Coromandel District Council. Food and drinks will be supplied thanks to a grant from the Coromandel-Colville Community Board. |
